Today we will be talking about the Global Cardboard Challenge. Ask your child about it. Please set aside any cardboard that you have over the next week and send it in with your child so that they can use it for their project. This is a wonderful annual event to celebrate child creativity. It was inspired by a 9 year old boy named Caine in 2012 and has grown into a worldwide movement. Watch the video below to learn more or click the picture above for more information! I can't wait to see what our group of students come up with on the 10th.

I just wanted to touch base on how homework is going to work this year with our class. I ask that your child reads on a nightly basis (to themselves, together with a family member, reading aloud to a family member, being read to by a family member and following along). This is something that is very important for the continued development of reading and writing. Students will be encouraged to use strategies we are focusing on in class. To go along with this, supporting numeracy at home can be done by helping your child see math in everyday life (at home, at the grocery store, out in nature - it is ALL around us).
I am a big believer in family time and being active through extra-curricular activities. Children spend eight hours a day at school working hard and the last thing you want is 'burn out.' Children need time to decompress after the school day so the only 'assigned' homework from me will be the above. If you or your child could write in their agenda - what they read the previous night so I could see - that would be great. Students can also use the links from our 'Super Sites' page to access websites that they can read on (Raz-Kids, Epic! Books) as well as reinforce math skills (Prodigy, Dreambox). Thought I would share this video for parents (some may have already seen it) as it shares some good information on how to support proportional reasoning development in your children. Seesaw is a portfolio we will be using throughout this school year so that students can take ownership of and document their learning for everyone at home to see on a weekly basis. I see many parents have already signed up and logged in which is AMAZING! We are still learning the many different ways that the students can add to their journals and I am very excited to be able to use this as another way for parents and families at home to get more of a snapshot into our daily life in the classroom. Students are really excited to be able to share their work with everyone at home and enjoy seeing comments and 'likes' when they do post their work. The video below is a great introduction/explanation and is worth a watch.
It was SO great to meet everyone on Wednesday evening! I am very much looking forward to working together during your child's journey in 3rd Grade! We have had such a great start to the school year - I can already see the great things everyone in this group will accomplish this school year.
