During this year’s observance of Lent at Holy Redeemer School, we will help to promote the values of sacrifice and almsgiving by supporting a social justice project called North of 60. North of 60 is an organization that is dedicated to helping Canada’s most northern communities by sending non-perishable food items to the community of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. Schools in the Ottawa Catholic School Board that participate in this initiative are asked to commit to collecting one specific item. The item that Holy Redeemer has chosen to collect is Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix (just add water, no eggs). Our goal is to collect 400 boxes of pancake mix.
Throughout Lent, we will also be collecting donations to support local families in need. The following is a list of special Lenten activities planned at Holy Redeemer. For the “special days” listed below, any donation to support our Lenten project would be appreciated. March 6th - Gum Day March 13th – Pyjama Day March 27th – Jersey Day/Rockets Colour Day (red and blue) April 3rd – Hat Day April 6th -April 9th - Easter Basket Raffle: tickets on sale- $1 each or 3 for $2

This school year students will have the opportunity to use the site 'Epic! Books' in the classroom for reading, research, etc...If you click on the picture below, it will link to a slide show that explains in more detail all the features offered through this website. You can also find a link to the Epic! website in the drop down menu for 'super sites' at the top navigation bar of our class website.
I wanted to pass along a link to a wonderful math site called YouCubed for you to use as a resource at home (if you would like) with your child.
It happens often that students have a fixed mindset when it comes to their ability in math and I want to help change that this year. Everyone can do math and do math well! There is no such thing as a 'math brain' or someone who is naturally a 'math person.' If you have a growth mindset and GRIT - you can learn any and all math. Our brains grow and change when we make mistakes - so, not being afraid of making a mistake in math class is something that will be stressed this year. We have already had many discussions about this in the first two weeks. Parents - I encourage you to navigate around the site and if you are looking for additional tasks to do at home to reinforce math concepts, there are many great ones on this site. Please click on the image below to be redirected to the YouCubed site.
I just wanted to pass along the link to some information for the Samaritans on the Digital Road resource that we will begin this week. This is a series of lessons we do at the beginning of the school year to help our students develop digital citizenship skills.
We will be having our parent information evening this Wednesday, September 11th from 6-7 pm. This is a great opportunity to come and say hello and have your child show you our new classroom. There will be no gathering in the gym or anywhere else in the school beforehand, so you are welcome to drop in anytime between 6-7 pm.
You can see Holy Redeemer's Jump Rope for Heart progress or donate by clicking here. Our goal is to raise $5 000 as a whole school. Let's go Rockets!
Just a reminder that as part of our energy conscious week at school, tomorrow is sweater day. We will be lowering our heat by 2 degrees so come wearing your favourite sweater and toque!
This month's Gospel Value focus is Love and Compassion. Our students helped make a video to show to the school at our assembly last week as a reminder of what love means.
***Reminder - tomorrow is Family Literacy Day here at Holy Redeemer. Please bring in your favourite book and dress comfy in your p.j.'s or dress up as your favourite character!***
